A Study of The Suffering Figures in The Assistant By Bernard Malamud

Abstract


This paper probes into the causes of the suffering figures of Bernard Malamud’s The Assistant from angles such as Jewish culture, history, and society. Through the analysis of the suffering figures in The Assistant, we find that the Jews don’t suffer for themselves but the whole human beings. Hence, the suffering figures in his fictions not only have the feature of jewishness but also universally symbolic meaning.

Résumé : L’article présent traite les raisons de la figure souffrante de Le Commis(The Assistant) écrit par Bernard Malamud sous les angles de la culture, de l’histoire et de la société juives. A travers l’analyse de cette figure souffrante, nous trouvons que Bernard Malamud écrit un thème de souffrance. Le peuple juif, bouc émissaire de l’histoire, souffrissent en effet pour toute la humanité. Le thème de souffrance est continuellement enrichi et développé dans l’oeuvre de Bernard Malamud. En apprenant aux juifs américain comment ils peuvent se sauver avec leur propre croyance religieuse, Malamud propose la délivrance des non-juifs. Par conséquent, la figure souffrante dans son oeuvre est dotée non seulement d’une caractéristique juive, mais aussi d’une portée symbolique universelle

摘 要 本文從猶太受難的文化、歷史和社會根源探討了馬拉默德的《夥計》中的猶太受難形象,通過分析馬拉默德的《夥計》中的受難形象,我們發現猶太人不是為自己受難,而是為整個人類受難。因此,馬拉默德筆下的受難形象不僅具有“猶太性 ”,還有普遍的象徵意義。
