A Proposed Framework for Cultivating Students’ Cross-Cultural Awareness in High School English Teaching

Abstract


One of the goals of English teaching during compulsory education is to cultivate students’ cross-cultural communicative competence. To achieve this goal, cultural knowledge and cross-cultural awareness are required. The status quo of students’ knowledge of English culture indicates that the cultural knowledge of today’s students is not sufficient and systematic enough for them to communicate successfully. The students had various pragmatic failures in communication. The study focuses on the cultivation of students’ cross-cultural awareness in high school and aims at explaining how to effectively promote the target culture learning in a non-native context like China through establishing a conceptual framework of cultivating students’ cross-cultural awareness, which is more effective and practical than through isolated classroom instruction.
